SURPRISING MAGIC OF COFFEE SHOP CULTURE
SURPRISING MAGIC OF COFFEE SHOP CULTURE
I work on remotely. In other words, I sometimes work out of shared workspaces like Neuehouse and HUB 17.
But for the most part, my MacBook and I can be found at the many coffee shops in New York City. I have been fortunate enough to enter a realm of culture that exists in New York City and I must say it is pretty special.
It is easy to make fun of the people who sit in Starbucks, for hours, drinking tons of coffee, and croissants. What could people possibly be doing on their laptops all of this time? Now, it is a little different.
The first time I experienced this was watching an old episode of Sex & the City. This is where I learned of many New York City trends coming up. The same with Seinfeld. But there was an episode where Carrie, who is a newspaper columnist, escape her boyfriend and apartment to write at her nearby Starbucks. She explained how she never understood these people and concluded that they were all running away from fights with their live-in boyfriends. Obviously, she was joking but she opened my eyes.
The coffee shops in New York City are an escape for us. It is a place that is warm, cozy, and most importantly has something most of crave on a daily basis, coffee. So now this is a destination we feel will fuel us, and also is our social place to gather.
Now that it is a regular thing for people to flock to their nearest coffee shop, connect to the wifi, drink copious amounts of caffeine and get a good seat near an outlet. And say for hours. At first, it was like, are the baristas judging me? Now, its like, as long as you buy something, stay as long as you want.
What is special about this, I guess you can call, "arrangement" is that when you are a part of it, you are a part of it. You begin to see the same people every day. You anticipate people waiting for your seat near the plug, and you let people know when you are leaving. Other patrons can watch your stuff when you use the bathroom. You know you are going to have to after drinking all of that coffee. You share the bathroom code with others, to save them time. This is where the magic happens.
Here at Wellvyl we are always trying to provide people with safe spaces and your coffee shop is one of them!
