NO 2018 MURDERS IN BROOKLYN'S "KILLING FIELDS"

Last December, an 80-year-old store clerk was shot and murdered in the most eastern section of Brooklyn East New York. The senior citizen had his life taken over the price of a beer. The section in which that murder took place is policed by the 75th precinct–recognized over the last three decades as the borough's murder capital (nicknamed "the killing fields"). While murder is on a city-wide decline, East New York included, the 75th precinct remains one of the Big Apple's most murderous neighborhoods. This is why the community is astonished at the area's body count thus far for 2018: Zero.

The decline appears to be attributed to two forces: 1. 75th police department paying special attention to gang activity and the subsequent amount of guns on the street. 2. Community leaders and elected officials putting money and elbow grease into youth outreach and neighborhood programs, which offer susceptible kids alternatives to the streets.

Let's pray (proactively) that this forgotten section of Brooklyn finally receives the attention and resources that the borough's northwestern areas have benefitted from so greatly. Read the full article on the 75th Precinct murder halt here.
